2008 was a simpler time, when the biggest problems in life were that emo kids ruled the world and society was split into Team Edward and Team Jacob. For some still mysterious reason, Twilight movies became an instant hit and instantly convinced an entire generation that eternal love is all about choosing between sparkling vampires and furry werewolves.
So, in honor of this legendary saga, here are some of the most awkward Twilight moments that were caught on camera.
The sparkle reveal
Remember the scene where Edward leads Bella into the woods, steps into the sunlight, and reveals that instead of becoming a well-done steak like a normal vampire, he sparkles? And it was not some light glitter face makeup either, but a full-on undead disco ball glam. What was even funnier about his scene was Bella’s reaction (if you can even call it that). Your “classmate” is reflecting light like a luxury chandelier, so maybe ask at least one follow-up question. Edward keeps trying to frame it as a terrifying reveal, saying he’s dangerous, he’s a killer, and Bella is like, “You can suck my blood anytime you want, baby.”
Edward admits to watching Bella sleep
This one is barely treading the line between romantic and creepy. Edward tells Bella he’s been sneaking into her room and watching her sleep. How many red flags does that confession raise with Bella? Apparently, zero. When he calls her “fascinating,” she takes it as a compliment. It also doesn’t help that the movie wants this to feel like a lovey-dovey scene. But upon rewatching it, it’s clear that these folks need a neighborhood watch program and some garlic-scented anti-mosquito candles.
Bella sees the Cullens for the first time
The first time Bella clocks the Cullen family in the Forks High cafeteria, the movie treats it like a royal entrance. Everyone looks up. The lighting changes, the mood shifts, and Bella stares at Edward so hard that it feels like she’s doing a bit more than undressing him with her eyes. We get the unnecessary Cullen info-dump from Jessica. Apparently, vampires have super-hearing strong enough to pick up gossip, so of course, the Cullens can hear it all. Nasty little buggers.
Edward smells Bella and has a full-body crisis
If you ever want to explain what the word “cringe” means, show them the biology-class scene where Bella’s scent is being fanned toward Edward’s supernatural nostrils. He immediately looks like he’s about to pop a blood vessel or something even more inappropriate. Was it her morning jog? Maybe a bad burrito? Bella’s face has “confusion” written all over it. If your crush reacts to you like you’re a chemical spill, you’re going to spend the rest of the day sniff-checking your hoodie.
